Letters of Alexander Bedell, 1859.

These two letters, which Bedell wrote to his parents, describe his work at Frémont's mine and mill in Bear Valley. He talks in detail about the hard times in California, the difficulty in finding gold, and the use of a stamp mill in gold and quartz mining.

Alexander Bedell left Bath, New Hampshire in 1858 and arrived in California in early 1859.
